Celebrating Its 1st Anniversary
“ONE HUG AT A TIME”
“The Hugs of Love – Remember Our Troops”
On August 30, 2008 the “Hugs of Love” support group celebrated its 1st Anniversary. Our group was founded by Nancy Kelley on August 30, 2007, with the following goals as the mission of the support group.
- To always remember our beloved troops who are serving our nation either on the home front or overseas.
- To give our love and support to the wives, mothers and/or friends of the soldier who is away from home.
- To give our time to them by writing letters, cards and mailing “We-Care” packages which include many surprises, knowing they may not be able to respond to Hugs due to their circumstances while serving our country.
- Each soldier receives our very own Hugs Bear “Manny”, who is now the official mascot of our group.
We will be honoring all of our soldiers by holding a special Flag Ceremony on August 30, 2008.
LTC Charles H. Perenick, Jr. of the 65th Public Affairs Operations Command had his unit raise this special American flag over the United States Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq on November 8, 2007 in appreciation to the entire “Hugs of Love” group for the support given to them over the 2007/2008 time they spent in Iraq. Nancy and Bob Kelley received this flag last April, and will proudly display it on all holidays.
A very special “thank you” goes our to our regular members; Louise Reid, Sharon Viger, Mary Jones, Deanna Viger and Nancy and Bob Kelley. Also to the countless friends and neighbors of Old Orchard Beach, Saco and Biddeford who donated items throughout our first year.
A special “thank you” also goes out to the children of Jameson Elementary School, St. Andre’s Catholic Youth Center, and the following businesses; Debby Davis of Artistry In Bloom, Saco, Maine and Missy Shupe of Board Silly Puzzles, Old Orchard Beach, Maine.
During it’s first year, “Hugs Of Love” mailed over 100 “We-Care” packages and corresponded with 47 soldiers in all. Goods also went to the children of Iraq as well as our soldiers, thanks to LTC Charles H. Perenick, Jr.
Plans to do more outreach in the community for our Veterans, such as the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough, Maine are underway for the coming year.
“Remember, even one hand written letter makes a world of difference to a lonely soldier.”
